Oh frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!

Well, after much waiting (transatlantic shipping, customs, and whatnot), my Claymore Castings arrived yesterday!!

And I discovered that, in my eagerness to order these, I accidentally ordered TWO sets of 20!!  D'oh!

Either I'll use them or maybe someone following here would like to trade for some other medieval models of one kind or another..

At any rate, with these three units of six levy-equivalents, my Stark "Dux Westerosum" forces need only one more unit of six men-at-arms to be complete.

Stark Liveried Pike - aka "Levy" in Dux Brit

As you can see, I've already made 3 head swaps using Gripping Beast hirdman heads.  I did this for two reasons: one, because there were too many kettle helms for my taste and, two, I wanted some visual ties to the other units.  Just need a bit of putty around the neck seam, but they came off rather well.

I'll confess I paused as I held the nippers poised to decapitate my $3 model that just traveled weeks from England.  But hey, gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet. Besides, I have another 16 models I didn't realize I ordered.

I'm moving on to texturing the bases and greenstuffing obvious joints and seams as I wait for Fireforge to release their Teutonic foot knights with the cloaks and bodies I need to finish the second unit of warriors/men-at-arms.

I'm happy with the momentum and my mantra is "Get them to the table."

  1. Just following your blog inspires me to restart my own westeros project. I really want to do the watch. I was figuring on perry mixed with GW rohan forces though. Great progress though, I'm looking forward to seeing them painted.

    1. Hi David,

I really appreciate your comment as that's why started this blog - to motivate myself and others who share this cool idea. While GRRM's books are not without their flaws, the setting is so ripe for tabletop modelling and gaming.

I would love to see what you come up with and, if you don't have a blog, would be happy to showcase your efforts here if that would help motivate you.

What the next best step you could take to get going again?

Nights Watch and Wildings would be unique. Don't think I've seen those on the interwebz yet. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough.

    2. Warlord Games has some ancient Celts and Germanics that might make a good base for your wildlings (assuming you'll be collecting foes to compliment your Night's Watch). I'll be posting two test figures tomorrow, although in retrospect they're a bit underdressed for how cold it gets north of The Wall.

    3. Thank you for the offer, but I do have a blog. I just started it to help diminish my pile of unpainted masses! If I'm a good boy, I've been promised an Alien Legion proxy army in 15mm and my planned Blackcloaks. But that means finishing two of six armies before tax returns arrive. ;)
@Thaddeus, I'll have to look into those. I'm planning on smallish forces for skirmishing beyond the Wall, for now!

    4. David,

Sounds like you've got a lot on the flight deck! (Most of us do, don't we?)

I'll find your blog and I'd be happy to support your parallel efforts in any way that makes sense.

      Best,

      Wade

    1. LoL. I'll put them in an envelope and send them to you for your conversions!

I like the look for medieval, just don't see it as a predominant silhouette for Stark.

  4. You could always keep your extra figures for expanding later on. Jim thought up some 'expanded' lists for Dux Britanniarum that i've tested out, and if you play bigger games in the future you might need them.
I'd like to see how they look once painted up!

    1. Hey Max,

      That's my thinking as well.

Can you direct me to these "expanded" lists? Interested...

    2. Here you are:
      http://arlequinsworld.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/dux-burgundium-assembling-your-force.html

It's got lots of different rules about adapting them for the 15th century, and you can find the lists under 'Burgundian Force' and 'French Force'.

  5. Glad to see your Claymores have finally got to California. Hope you have a chance to show some individual photos of the headswaps. Have to agree, the kettle helmets don't fit my idea of the Stark's either. If I had to suggest houses that the kettle helmets would fit I would be looking at Tullys, Aaryns and Freys.
